Dr. Marcus A. Conant

In 1981, Dr. Conant identified the first cases of Kaposi’s sarcoma in San Francisco and started the Kaposi’s Sarcoma Clinic at the University of California.  The next year, with Frank Jacobsen, Esq. and Mr. Richard Keller, he started the organization that became the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.  The following year, Dr. Conant obtained a $3 million grant from the State of California to begin AIDS research in the University of California system.  Research then grew to include private facilities such as Stanford. By 1989, Dr. Conant’s private practice had grown to such proportions that he opened The Conant Medical Group HIV/AIDS Clinic at Mt. Zion Hospital. The clinic rapidly grew to be the largest private HIV/AIDS clinic in San Francisco and one of the largest in the world.  Dr. Conant also started The Conant Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 dedicated to educating patients about the latest treatments for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. The Conant Medical Group closed in 1996 when managed care made it financially impossible to survive.

In 2007, Dr. Conant reestablished the Conant Medical Group where he continues to practice traditional medical dermatology.  He prefers to devote his time to caring for his old patients and new patients referred to him by other physicians for consultation regarding a challenging diagnostic or therapeutic problem.

The only cosmetic procedure Dr. Conant performs is Sculptra injections. Dr. Conant was one of the doctors that did the research that helped get Sculptra approved in the United States and testified at the Food and Drug Administration in favor of approval of the drug for HIV/AIDS patients. Dermik, the company that makes Sculptra, invited Dr. Conant to be one of the national investigators doing the FDA mandated follow up study to determine the long-term safety and efficacy of Sculptra. That five year study is now in its third year. With the recent FDA approval of Sculptra for cosmetic procedures on patients who are not HIV positive, Dr. Conant will be delighted to use the skill that he has developed over the last five years to evaluate and treat anyone the desire to use this facial filler.

Dr. Conant also conducts clinical studies working towards the eradication of HIV/AIDS and STDs with cutaneous manifestations.
